Prof. Dr. D. Ulrich - Plastic Surgeon in Innsbruck

 

Since November 1, 2025, I have been the Director of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the Medical University of Innsbruck.
From 2012 until October 2025, I served as Professor and Director of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands – one of Europe’s leading academic institutions in plastic surgery.

In recognition of my work in innovative and high-quality patient care, I was honoured by the Radboud University Medical Board in 2015 as a Principal Clinician.

 

Education and International Training

 

I studied medicine at Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany, with additional academic stays in Switzerland, and received my doctoral degree in 1999.
My specialist training in Plastic Surgery was completed at the RWTH University Hospital Aachen, followed by prestigious international fellowships:

In 2004, I obtained my habilitation (venia legendi) at RWTH Aachen, qualifying as a university lecturer in Plastic Surgery.
In 2007, I earned the additional qualification in Hand Surgery in Germany.
I am registered as a Plastic Surgeon in the BIG Register (Netherlands) and with the Tyrolean Medical Chamber (Austria).

 

Academic Career and Leadership

 

Until 2009, I was Deputy Director at the Department of Plastic Surgery, RWTH Aachen, where I continue to hold the title of Associate Professor.
From 2009 to 2011, I worked in reconstructive microsurgery at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam before becoming Full Professor &  Director in Nijmegen.

 

Between 2014 and October 2025, I also chaired the Euregional Forum for Cross-Border Healthcare, promoting patient access across the Euregio Rhine-Waal region.

 

Scientific Recognition and International Engagement

 

I am the author of numerous scientific and clinical publications, a reviewer for international journals, and an active member of major European and global societies for Plastic Surgery.

For my scientific work, I have received several international awards, including:

  • EURAPS Fellowship
  • AAPS Fellowship
  • Young Plastic Surgeon Scholarship (EURAPS)

 

In May 2026, I assumed the presidency of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS), the leading European professional society in our specialty  a distinction that allows me to help shape the future of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in Europe.

 

Personal Note – Living and Working in Tyrol

 

Outside my professional life, I enjoy spending time in the Tyrolean mountains with my family – a balance that keeps me grounded and inspired.
